Book Choice

After searching Amazon.com for a while for book choices, I narrowed my choices down to three books. The first one was Networked: The Social Operating System by Lee Rainie and Barry Wellman (April 27, 2012). This book is about how large, loosely knit circles of the network individualism expand opportunities of problem solving, decision making, and personal interaction. It frees the individual from restrictions and strengthens strategies and skills. Raine and Wellman discuss the 'triple revolution' that has brought on this transformation. The three ideas include; the rise of social networking, the capacity of the Internet to empower individuals, and the always-on connectivity of mobile devices. The second book I chose was Technocreep: The Surrender of Privacy and the Capitalization of Intimacy by Thomas Keenan (September 13, 2014). This book is about the revolution of technology is starting to take over our private lives. Privacy is no longer secure and technologies are rapidly invading people's daily lives. The third and final book I chose was It's Complicated: The Social Lives of Networked Teens by Danah Boyd (Feburary 25, 2014). This book talks about how teenagers communicate online through Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter and the affects of these sites on their daily lives. Boyd uncovers the majority of the myths that regard teen's use of social media such as identity, privacy, safety, danger, and bullying. This book especially interested me because I can relate to it. I use all these sites and am really curious to what Boyd has to say about social media and teens including me. This book has received pretty good ratings with 4.3 out of 5 on Amazon. I read some of the reviews and everyone really enjoyed reading this book. Boyd also seems very reliable and knows what she is talking about. She has traveled the country interviewing teenagers on this topic. To conclude, with all the positive feedback and my interest, I am choosing to read It's Complicated: The Social Lives of Networked Teens.

  1. Since another student is doing the same book as me I decided to change mine. I found book similar called Closer Together, Further Apart by Robert Weiss and Jennifer Schneider (February 18, 2014). This book is about how technology impacts communication in relationships and across generations. It seems relatively similar to the other book I was going to read. I am very curious to how technology influenced our relationships with family members, friends, work, significant others, and etc. Robert Weiss is a therapist and international speaker on the the digital age. He was featured in LA Weekly 2013 People Issue and seems very educated on the topic. This is why I am choosing to read this book for the project.
